PROJECT 1
Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses
project brief
The easiest way to solve the problems with thermal comfort and daylight distribution in modern homes may be to include passive design in these structures. Strictly speaking, the passive design does not call for artificial lighting or mechanical heating, or cooling. In general, passively planned buildings will make use of the local environment to maintain thermal comfort. Buildings that adopt passive design strategies may be more cost-effective, and comfortable, and have lower greenhouse gas emissions from mechanical ventilation, lighting, heating, and cooling.
TASK
This is our project Architecture and Environment's first assignment, which is a group assignment. We total have 7 people in a group. Besides that, we are required to form a group containing sem 1.5 students and sem 2.5 or above's students. We are required to choose a semi-D house or corner lot ddouble-storyhouse for a case study to identify the issues of assessing daylight and thermal comfort at the house that we choose. Not only that, we must give solutions based on the issues we found. We are also required to provide an A2 size poster that can be a portrait or landscape. In the poster, we need to have some data and measurements such as the LUX reading of the houses and also drawings which are floor plan, elevation plan, section plan, and location plan.
We decided to choose one of our group members, Gan Zi Fung's house. It is a semi-D house.
- Choose a corner lot for a two-story terraced or two-story detached home.
- Choose a location where thermal comfort and daylighting are concerns.
- To pinpoint problems with thermal comfort and daylighting in the selected space(s), respectively.
- Get secondary information on the Sun Path chart, the Psychometric chart, and any pertinent climatic information.
- Collect information on thermal comfort and daylighting.
- The results must be neatly summarised on the floor plan of the selected area.
- Development of an idea for applying passive design to a selected space or spaces to increase thermal comfort and daylighting.
- Take relevant before-and-after pictures of the targeted area.
- At least one suggestion for thermal comfort and daylighting, respectively.
REFLECTION
In this assignment, I learned the importance of teamwork. Since this is a group assignment and we are required to form a group with seniors, so we need to get in touch to complete our assignment well. “ Teamwork makes the dream work. I appreciated that I met my group members, they all put 100% effort to complete their tasks. Not only that, but they also send their helping hand to those who have faced some problems.
Communication is key to success. Good communication can make the difference between confident, motivated members and an unproductive team with low morale. It builds thriving relationships and gives people the information they need to contribute to the success of the business. In this assignment, I noticed that good communication is one of the keys to success. Since we don't know each other before this assignment, so we need to get in touch. We have some meetings in discord to discuss the task together. Besides, we created a group in WhatsApp for us to contact each other easily.
Not only that, I learned some knowledge about lighting in this assignment. And also how to take the LUX reading and measurement. Not only that, I explored digital drawing during this assignment. I learned how to use Procreate to draw all the plans and color it.
